Hi there,
I've noticed that my V8 can make a highish rattle at just over 2000 revs while it's cold. This noise disappears once the engine reaches optimal temperature.
I was wondering what causes this and if it's a normal thing?
The engine sounds great and drives awesome otherwise.

It's piston slap and almost all LS's do it, some more severe than others (the L98's were particularly bad for it)

My WM used to slap/rattle around a lot for the first few km when cold until the metal expands etc.

Even the dealers will tell you it's normal, just drive it gently until it's up to temperature (which is best practice anyway).

SS Commodore - Ford Territory ... both camps
If mine made bad noises over 2000rpm when cold I'd just not take it over 2000rpm until warm. 1800rpm changes will keep you up with traffic.

Mine does it too. How hard would it be to warm the engine up 30 minutes before takeoff with a heater or something? Would be nice.

Like the fire brigade?
They have immersion heaters in the sump and coolant system.
