The other shortcut if you can’t get a kid or the wire to work, is to attach the hose along the sender so the end hangs near the sock and reinstall. It’s not connected to the swirl pot but will drop the returned fuel into the pot.

he was holding the tank between his legs i tried to find it was posted feb 2020 and here is a old thread from wotever he cut his tank open with some handy pics
Last one I was able to get the white piece off the swirl pot with an old wire coat hanger. Just hooked it in there and twisted a bit and was able to get it to release. It wasn't to hard to get it back in with a new piece of hose connected and twisting motion.

I was told the white piece on the swirl pot has a venturi effect and draws in more fuel. When the fuel level is below the top of the swirl pot, the return hose and drawn in fuel will keep the swirl pot overflowing and help keep the fuel pump cool.

I don’t know about the science, my hand was too big, and I couldn’t get it back on. This photo was from the SS years ago. I got the shits and did it this way so I could get it back on the road.

After I asked the neighbour if I could borrow one of his kids and he refused, I managed to slip a piece of submersible hose with a semi done up hose clamp onto the connection on the swirl pot.
I used a flexible drive screwdriver to do up the clamp.

Found some bits in the bottom of tank, found the swirl pot which is to the left and below the main hole.

Still cant see pipe or hose to go into but know where it is now.
Wonder if these Pliers will help get the old hose on/off thinking the curve one might reach it.
I need one of those Snake Cameras that connect to your phone to see properly lol.
