Thing is though, if those bolts were causing an out of balance issue it would have been apparent from day 1 and not come and go.
I did have the bolts out a few weeks ago swapping the handbrake cable. I get the feeling it may have started not long after that. The vibes I noticed maybe a week or more ago but I thought not much of it until yesterday.

Seems odd that would be the issue but I guess I will find out when I drive it next. The front coupling bolts all face the same way and I never touched that.

I did find this on YT. Although looking at his vid he had the bolts facing the same way?

I do remember the other user on the forum with a weird balance issue and it was found rubber was breaking up inside the carcass and would settle changing the balance each time but not sure what tires they were or how old they were etc.
That was me and it was only part of the problem. Never heard of it before but it was the rotors that were the main issue.

I have a new set of T2s in the shed. If the problem is still there I will look at fitting new front rotors and pads, sooner than later. Probably still have 12 months of pad left otherwise I would have swapped them when the front suspension was replaced.

From what I can see the coupling is not directional. There is nothing on it that specifies which way it should face and it looks the same on both sides. Although I have the part number readable if I face the front of the diff.
I’ve previously posted YouTube vids on the subject in your BT thread. These vids clearly show the way the donut is installed is critical.

Basically it’s the thicker part of the donut that is meant to carry the load (between shaft and diff flange) when driving forward. I‘d assume the 2 sets of 3 bolts pointing in opposite directions simply aids balance.

PS: seen you’ve referenced one of the vids already and in that video he installs the bolts incorrectly according to the instructions he’s received with the donuts

I’d assume the bolt head would be against the rubber side of the donut with the nuts being against the steel flange side. Such means 3 bolts will face one way while the other three face the other way and that lines up with the instructions he’s received.

(I still haven’t checked the VF workshop manual…)

Can it be reversed if the locators are all in the flanges. I will have another look tonight.

I'd expect the donut can be installed facing either forward or backward or installed clocked in the wrong way... so technically there is 4 orientations one can install it but supposedly only one is correct

So I had a look at the VF workshop manual (which presumably is same as VE) for some clarity. And it's really clear... not... Make of it what you will :(

I included the snippets below for donut (coupling) replacement and also driveshaft replacement.

Sadly there is no clear explanation in what orientation the coupling is installed... That's really annoying when the manual states to take not and mark the orientation because it means some dipshit whoes worked on teh car before you will lead you down the garden path.

This explains quite clearly which direction the coupling should face using the triangular mark on the coupling
