We'd have to get rid of this revenue collecting goverments first and piss off a lot of low performance drivers that think they own the road or teach them what keep left unless overtaking means. It wont happen as our goverments are addicted to fining the people .
Bang on. Higher speed limits would require getting rid of a lot of parasite hanger on politicians and bureaucrats and getting a lot of bad drivers off the road.

Will never happen. It would require better road construction and actual maintenance firstly. Secondly we would need better trained drivers, the current laws are setup to suit the lowest common denominator.

Holy crap, welcome back mate

what would it take to get rid of this revenue raising attitude of the government though? elect a new government?
protest on the streets?
etc

basically what would it take to have higher speed limits and sensible enforcement like the rest of the world

australia required 120 hours to get a licence
higher than anywhere else in the world
australian drivers are among the best in the world

Are you sure about that, in some countries it's extremely hard to get a license. 120 hours of what, driving around gaining "experience", but what experience? Good experience, or just forming bad habits like the other drivers around them?

Aussies are definitely not amongst the best drivers in the world, they aren't even as good as Kiwi's and most of them are fairly terrible....

I'd rather fight for reasonable enforcement.

Look at the US, most highways have 55 or 65mph speed limits and yet in many states you see people travelling at 75-80mph on highways.

americans are terrible drivers but (as you pointed out above) they routinely drive 75-80mph on freeways without any issue

As immortality said, you just have to demonstrate 120 hrs spent driving a car. You can be being taught by a well meaning, but terrible driving parent.
Or spend it driving on nothing but 50kph grids and Coles carparks.

Straight line speed =/= good driving.

I don't think Americans are good drivers, they just have an interesting relationship with the law as they always have had and very much changes state by state.

Was just watching an interesting video about Alaska and it's history. Americans have been reasonably lawless since they arrived in the Americas.
