I would fix what you have timing chain and a few gaskets are simple enough. IF it was really low on comp in one cylinder it would be a different story.

And that's it, the VR engine has good comp, good oil pressure and with a few hours work and $200 in parts it will go for a while yet.

Hey Losh,I may have a timing cover for you.
Finally managed to lock my spare motor up to be able to get bastard bolt out,my compressor wouldn't cut it (not enough flow?)
but a 3 foot bar did.
Anyhow it's off of an auto 3.8 Buick so has cam angle sensor.
Going to try and put a photo up then I'll go see if I can get a postage quote.

If got a pinhole in timing cover try KneadIt epoxy from Bunnings etc

Used it a few times with surprising results.

If it works all good & if it doesn't change cover.

Nah mine just has a chip in the back near the seal. Looks like a previous owner has gouged it with a screw driver when removing the seal. I found out I can probably have it welded fairly cheap. Or I can use those brazing rods mentioned and fill it myself. Just need to se if BOC sell them.

Engine should be out by now. Hopefully i will be right to collect the trans this arvo, ready to have the servo fitted in a week or so.
I should know exactly what the engine issue is come Monday when he tears the engine down.

Bit of an update timing gear is off and the chain was pretty bad. The boss said to the bloke I spoke too, who sits in the office that he has done a few and this was probably the worst chain he has seen as far as wear goes. So here's hoping that the rattle will be fixed with the new TC kit. Guess if not it needed replacing regardless. Hoping to order parts today and have the engine reassembly commencing maybe early next week, depending on his workload.

She'll be purring like a kitten in no time, chain is easy.

Yep and with new rear main and rubber sump gasket I won't be having to clean underneath once a month.
