as far as legalities go, 383hatch is a better person to answer than me.

personally, i would hook up the evaporative loss and cats.

a LOT of nasties come out the tailpipe with unleaded fuel and its nice to know that a lot of them get filtered via your cats, especially if you spend more than a few minutes in a shed with the engine running.

and with the constant flow of fuel through a fuel pump, up to the rails and back again, the fuel gets heated up a fair bit. on a hot day you really want evaporative loss to be functioning so you dont start venting fumes out of your fuel filler cap, or worse, expanding your tank. your ute should already have a carbon can on it, but grab one off whatever holden you took the engine from and use the hoses you already have hooked up to the OEM points on the engine.

This is a real grey area. Technically, it should be engineered as that particular car never came out with an injected 5 litre although it was available with a 308. However, I went and registered my ute with no engineers and didn't have a problem, but I have heard of a few guys being knocked back with no engineers report.

As far as emissions go, I used everything from the donor car. So I run the cat converter, charcoal canister and I also modified the filler neck so it only fits the unleaded filler (which is a bit unnecessary now as you can't buy leaded petrol anymore) just incase I needed to get an engineers report it was all done.

So, I guess in the end, just take it to vic roads and see what they say, they'll either let it go or ask for an engineers report.

yeah this is a weird one. we used to have to do it to all jap cars, but now its not necessary... but on older cars that get engineered, the guy signing the form will ask you to fit one...

it looks like ADR17 was reppealed in 2005... but engineers still ask for it.

Sweet, thanks guys. So the engineering aspect is mainly for emissions requirements etc?

It's still running on straight gas which makes things easier in that I won't need all of the pollution stuff hooked up. I'll definitely still run it with the cat though. Eventually I'd like to have it on petrol too though.

The engines in now, just starting on the wiring.

The engineers will just be to check the engine install. They won't check brakes, suspension and such as it's all standard and the brakes are all the same from 6 to 8. In my opinion, that type of conversion shouldn't need an engineers, as it's a bolt in conversion with all the existing mounts and stuff and the car doesn't need to be modified at all. Like I said mine went straight through rego with no engineers, but I think it just depends on the person doing the inspection at vic roads. To be honest, the guy had no idea what he was looking at, I'm pretty sure he didn't even know it was a different engine.

I considered getting an engineers certificate, but being on club reg it makes it all a bit too hard (and some clubs don't like 'modern' mods) and I don't know how it would affect my insurance. So I've decided to put the 304 to the side for the moment - might put in my statesman later on though.. or sell it. I'm still going to keep the t700 in there though and wire the lockup solenoid to earth through the 4th gear switch.

I'm slapping together a 308 atm that I bought in pieces. Already ordered all the parts and will be putting it together this week. It's already .060 over, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time and money on parts and checking tolerances/balancing etc.

The block I got came with heaps of spares including these heads:

I was told that they've been modified, although I get the feeling they're just standard VL heads... If anybody knows, it'd be great to know what I have.

The block just for shits and gigs:

This document that I found yesterday from vicroads saying P plate restrictions do not apply to club reg cars now. Providing this is true you should be sweet to keep the 304. Come down to YVCB tonight and talk to Peter Wyss, he should be able to set you up fine with club reg.

Yep, that's why I'm building this one! The rules are going to change again shortly though. ATM, p platers are allowed to drive any club reg'd vehicle but soon they'll only be allowed to drive a standard club reg vehicle without performance mods.

It's been on club rego since Jan this year, I did a couple thousand Kay's in it before the 202 decided it wasn't gonna work anymore lol and I haven't driven it since Easter. Can't wait to drive it again.

I'll probably come down tonight sometime. I'm going go karting first though :p
