I have a mechanic mate (who is now 73
years of age, and been a mechanic all
his life) who says he's filled up to the
'U' on 'FULL' on the dipstick, both with
the old red motors and Ecotecs, and
never had a drama.
I, however prefer not to go over the
full line and if I accidently do, just
get some clear fish tank tube and stick
it down the dipstick, suck until the
oil is nearly at the top, then attach a
squirty bottle trigger mechanism with
the straw inserted into the tubing and
squirt the excess
oil into a container. Takes a while, but
it's easier than loosening the sump plug
IMO and possibly dropping all or too
much oil.

my son inlaws mother overfilled by 5lts iol ,thay rang me, engine light on, making noise ect,i told them to bring it around i would check it. checked the dipsick about 50cms above full mark, so idraind it out, of course 10lt oil every where, put back right amount, and restsrted, light still on, noise from tappets ect. so i told her to take it to a work shop and get it checked out asap, eny way jumped in the next morming started and all ok no light no noise but i did notice a few oil leakes wnen draining the oil

That would have been the frothed up oil settling overnight.

Can drain the oil quickly.

Undo sump plug til its ready to come out, and angle it so drains a bit of oil and will run down the sump itself(make sure sump is clean). I did this once before, drained a 1litre of oil and put back in the correct amount and excess back into the container.

Can get oily on fingers, but thats about it
