Somehow I was expecting more, at least it's cheap and easy repairs.

Yeah me too, to be honest. I've had much nicer, much newer cars fail much worse than that. I'm pretty sure my mechanic is being a bit generous in his assessment, but these repairs will keep it road legal

Well I am extremely pleased to say that Rumble Passed rego! No really im pretty stoked I honestly expected to be driving a starlet right about now.
There are still a few small issues that are next to be fixed
1. It really does need new tyres they are borderline worn out
2. The horn needs fixing...as far as we can tell all the wiring is missing out of the steering column

And just for LOLs

They said I needed a bumper for rego....

Bumper this!

Also, the cheap way to lower a car...add a hundred kilos of steel to the front :D

After:

Job done :spot on:

Still a 4wd! I hate to say, it looks terrible!

Glad it passed.

Love the bumper for rego!

Well yesterday I started to notice a mettalic rubbing noise from the front of the car at low speed, its not linked to the clutch or engine revs, so Im guessing its the hub bearing, as the hubs were tightened for rego last week....new hub bearings to follow

also, does anyone know the red-line temperature of a 202 red motor in degrees celcius?
I have an aftermarket temp gauge, that seems to work (moves with the thermostat operation) however its a generic gauge going well over 200 degrees c. The car currently sits at around 65 to just under 80 degrees during driving...does this sound correctish?

The best operating temp is around the 80-95 degree area, if its sitting around 65 you need to warm it up a little, maybe a smallish canvas flap over part the radiator.

But that's if the gauge is accurate.

It feels pretty accurate, the car runs like arse for the first 10-15 min stuttering under acceleration and stuff.....never thought my cooling system would too efficient :w00t: How does one check the accuracy said device?

Boil your kettle, and dip the temp sender into newly boiled water.

I like about 85-86 degree on a temp gauge that works pretty accurate for the amount of variation your saying 65 to just under 80 . If that's happening after its been running for 10-15 minutes I'd put a new thermostat in it.
where is the temp sender for the aftermarket gauge you have in it in the block?

edit from reading your post again I think the thermostat is stuck open or someone has knocked the guts out of it do as kingwood country says to test it for what its worth just put a new 1 in, remember to change the bearing cones as well when you do wheel the wheel bearings. The never ending eating of your money old cars.
