Just thought I'd make a thread for others to refer to when looking to get car serviced, as I just did a quick ring around and there's a big difference in prices.

If at all possible, keep discussion to a minimum (yes we all know how expensive dealers are!), and just post useful info regarding pricing with following template. If we can develop a good 'ready reckoner' for all of us, could become a useful resource.

Engine Type:
Transmission:
Log Book Service Interval:
Any other work done to affect price:

MY10 VE International Sportwagon SIDI 3L
Engine Type: SIDI 3L V6
Transmission: Auto
Log Book Service Interval: 30,000km (minor service)
Any other work done to affect price: No, but also selected NOT to have Pollen Filter changed.

Price: $189.60
Company/Location: Goodyear Erindale ACT

Also got quotes from Holden ($320), Ultratune ($240), Goodyear- another store ($240). I've chosen not to mention specific locations of these stores, and instead just promoting the store I actually went to because of the better price. Car went in 10am, ready before 1pm... very happy :spot on:

I get mine logbook serviced at Pitlane Performance in frankston. It's abit of a drive but the owner Mick is a great guy, checks everything twice and is always good to talk to. I actually don't remember my 60k service, but I think it was $160-$180.

I contacted 6 dealerships is my area (Sydney) and got 6 different responses

I service my car with my mechanic and he charges between 150 and 180 for Commodore service

This is him http://www.camr.com.au/

Here is the details from dealerships

Dealership 1

Regarding all the questions, answers as follow,

-7500 km Service $235.00
-15,000km Service 340.00
- We use Valvoline Oil Synpower 5w40
-You are welcome to bring your own oil as well.

Dealership 2

The 7 500km interval service will cost $220.00incl GST and the
15 000km service will be $305.00 incl GST
the engine oil used by us is a Caltex 10w30 semi synthetic and yes we can use other oil brands if the oil is supplied by the customer

Dealership 3

The price of a 15,000km service is $420 and the brand of engine oil that we use is Castrol Magnatec. If you would like to use a different brand of oil that is no problem as long as it meets the specifications the engine requires and if the price of that oil exceeds the cost of the oil that we use then the service price will change if we supply it.

Dealership 4

If you plan to service your vehicle every 6 month or 7,500 klm we would recommend a fixed price service at $220.00 each service
We use Caltex motor oil as recommended by Holden
Yes we would be happy to use any oil as supplied by our customers as long as it meets the specification required

Dealership 5

The 7,500 km service would $163.00
The 15,000km service would be $320.00 all up
The engine oil we use is Castrol Professional semi synthetic oil
It is 10/30 grade oil this is recommend for your car

Dealership 6
Your Commodore is service every 15,000 kms or 12 months which ever comes first so you would not do a 7,500 service.
The 15,000 km service for a v6 auto approx $270.00. The oil is Valvoline 5w/30.

I'd rather shoot myself than leave the oil in for 15 000 k's

My mechanic has got collection of samples (engine oils and oil filters) collected from commodores serviced by dealerships

All I can say is OMG.... mostly black thick gunk that resembles no oil !
Oil filter covered in thick layer of sludge that is SOLID and you would struggle to identify it as filter (talking about cartridge style filters)

So if you drove 1000k+ a week then when would you change the oil/filter in a VE? Mine gets done every 3 months on the 15K and the oil is always still golden although not like new. Becomes uneconomical to do it every month for me as thats 3 log book services a year at a minimum. Being doing the same for 20 years with no issues although it used to be every 10K until the VZ and now the VE.

Well that's obviously exceptional circumstances

I'm talking about average use ...something like 20 000 k's a year

I struggle to do 1000k's in a month

Obviously 1000 k's of highway driving is complete;y different 1000 k's of city driving...

Oil would be exposed to completely different set of circumstances
