Today i had my transmission diagnosed by the local Auto transmission specialist in Wodonga. The quality of the fluid was all good but it was 1.2 liters under filled. He did a complete service including flushing out the torque converter, this was the first time the torque converter had been flushed in 180,000 Klm.
He told me that the oil pump had more than likely been cavitating until it picked up oil when i moved off. Exactly what i thought was happenning in regards as the sound of a bearing that was starving for oil when i put the car in gear.
So the Perth company had under filled the Transmission when they fitted my trans cooler. This was a long term legit company, i suppose one of the boys was having a bad day when he worked on my car ?
There ya have it, sub standard work was the cause of my problem.
Bit of info there for you guys.

The guy told me there was no leaks so put it down to incompetent work. Anyway, what can you do when Holden do not provide a dip stick to check the level of your Trans fluid. ?

We can only rely on tradsman to do a proper job.
Sucks really.
Also told me considering i'm towing a van that the trans fluid should be changed every 40,000 Klm.
Sounds good to me.

Who was the place who didnt put enough trans fluid in your wagon?
Im in perth and would like to know who never to take my car to,nothing like a name and shame to stop others getting stuffed around.
Not having a dipstick is perfectly fine when the guy doing the trans service isnt a dipstick himself....

Na, i've had work done at this shop over many years and they have always done good work.

Im gunna put this down to one employee who did not do the correct thing.
Easy as that really .

Tomorrow will be the money shot when i start it up cold, it better have zero noise or it's back to the shop.
I'll post again just to confirm it was a low fluid issue.

I'm surprised that 1.2 litres short of oil would make a difference actually. Does not seem like a lot to me but I'm no Auto transmission expert.

I think trans are quite fussy about oil levels and from experience regular oil changes in trans definitely prolongs live I have a hq with a turbo 350 making over 500 eng hp and same torque it had a basic shift kit I drag raced that for 10 years with lots of street miles and a 3000 converter before getting it checked out by my trans guy and yes it needed work but pretty happy with it considering everyone told me a 350 was to light for my car I put it down to lots of oil changes

Transmissions are more sensitive to oil level than engines.
Interesting you say the torque converter needed flushing. I always thought that transmission fluid circulates through the entire transmission over and over. So through the valve body, torque converter and everything thing else. So by dropping to the pan and adding new fluid fairly regularly the fluid makes its way through the whole transmission and you didn't have to service the torque converter separately. Can anyone confirm?

I know the 6 speed auto in the v8 is very sensitive to oil level, they dont work too good when they are that low on oil.

Youll be thinking differently if hes fkd your trans, fingers crossed,if someone costs me money after ive paid them to do a job ill name and shame all day long,im no fkn test bunny for his bad days.
I find it very odd that the trans guy said the quality of the oil was fine but then he proceeded to do a full flush on your transmission.
If the oil was ok he wouldnt have needed to flush it,he could have just topped it up.
Has your trans ever been serviced since you owned it?
Id be surprised if you dont have issues now.

Normally its just called flushing the transmission,if you change the oil enough times you can get all the oil clean,i used to service my eb v8 trans that regularly the trans oil was always cherry red.

@Terry57 get a written report stating trans was found to have 1.2 litres too low a fluid level prior to a it’s full service. Then if you have any issues with TC or bearing failure down the road, you may be in a slightly better position to put some ACL hurt on the dealer that didn’t service the box correctly @ 155,000 kms.

Thanks for letting us know the results so far.
