I'm on 128xxxkm on my ve ss. Going by the books I'm due one at 150xxx but I figured I'd do it now since I've got plenty of time on my hands. So anyway, my question is: is changing the tranny yourself something that's recommended for these cars, or is it best left to professionals? Basically, is it possible to remove all fluid without one of those vacuum machines to pros have?

Do it the usual way,

Get a BIG oil pan from Supercheap or Repco, can always use it with Engine oil change and, and in this case Auto Oil change
Loosen the bolts SLOWLY, and let it drain in the oil pan,
Then loosen them a bit more till the Auto Sump is almost off,
Remove it, clean it up [while the remainder of the oil is dripping/draining from the auto]
Replace the Filter, and re-assemble it the Auto Sump with a new gasket, and tension the bolts up to spec.

This is the tricky part [not hard, just a but tricky]

The VE Autos don't have a dip stick to refill them, [which is PITA]
They do have a re-fill plug [Plastic I think I read] on the top of the trans housing base on the Drivers side,
And you have to put the SAME EXACT amount of oil back in, that you drained, but pumping it in,
there is a procedure to do this, so you don't under fill it, and/or over fill it.

PS: I have attached a image of the re-fill plug location
"Dis-regard the Heading of the Page" as it the only page that shows the filler plug clearly.

It's a 2012 auto series 2 l76 v8 so it's got the 6L90 I believe? Great info, much appreciated, however is all that info still relevant for my car? Thanks

All VE's have the same Auto re-filling point.

I'd agree with what they said, just take the pan off and service it that way. You don't need to try and flush it and replace every drop of fluid in it all at once. Then in a year or two do it again.

Ok so first time working on this car, is this by any chance the radiator drain plug? I've been looking for that blue looking one but maybe that's for series 1 commodores?

Is it on the bottom of the radiator on the drivers side? Another option is to pull the bottom radiator hose off, as those plastic plugs occasionally crack and need replacing when you undo them.
