Hi

Picking up a VQ statesman series 3 on Saturday.

Been told it had the original 5L replaced with a VP 5L. The keys were lost but the engine was all good and with keys will turn over but won't get spark.

Does the VP and VQ engines run with a different distributor or what mods need to be done to get spark and running.

The engines are the same. VQ's have a security lock in the passenger side door frame, alongside the hinges that needs to be turned on.

Does the central locking work? Do all the instrument lights come on?

Do you get any fault codes?- You test for these with a paperclip earthing out a plug in the passenger side footwell- detailed instructions are posted in this forum if you don't know how to do this.It could be as simple as a wire not connected properly to the oil pressure switch.

5Ls have the **** up trio. Ignition module, coil and HES in the dizzy. Usually find it is one of these that’s given up on life.

I still haven't got it started. Figures out keys it cranks... mechanic mate check coil and leads l.. no spark.

The dash shows engine light... 'engine !' And no 'use remote' light I tried crossing all the pink leads under the dash no change, there is no theft protection module
.. only what I believe might be the plug (one plug isn't plugged into anything under glove box)

Fuel pump works. And the battery is hooked up.to all visible cables. What else could it be??

Should I get a mobile auto sparky out.

Sounds like previous owners never had it started.

May simply be something not plugged in right.

He had it running with original engine, head blown... swapped it for a recond VP 5L... was running in previous car

Could it be old fuel.. has been sitting for 3 years put in 30L of premium

VN-VP same plug (blue/oval shape). Is it plugged in. You would be surprised what people miss in their haste to get an engine up and running. Check under cap (if you haven't) that the rotor button is seated in it's slot. That both the plug ins @ the distributor module are plugged in. That coil + and - wires are still on the coil, the neg. is only a spade clip connection.

And earths.

5L's are notorious for earthing issues (they were bad from the factory and age poorly) - I always make a habit to upgrade them.
