Sounds like you took your car to a bunch of morons. It wasn't smoking when it went in so it's their responsibility to fix whatever they've broken.

Can't handle hiflow pump they recommended (has a higher flow pump from factory) so lets charge you to probably put the wrong pump in.

Was it squeaking or tapping when you took it in?

I would have takin it to someone else the moment they said, they have never worked on this type of engine before nor did they know it was AFM :/

What year is your VE SS?

Curious, can we tell if a lifter is about to fail? Or does it just happen on the spot when it wants.

If the car wasn't smoking before you took it in then thats their problem not yours.

If it truly does need a rebuild then thats on them.

I'd still try and get a second opinion elsewhere, these guys seem like morons, I wouldn't be believing anything they are telling you.

Meh 320,000 km @ 640 hp is decent duty to ask of any component, if you had to choose one to shitter itself it would be the fricken lifter. Revised set from GenV on its way from US at the moment.
Good opportunity to build improvements so it’s an ill wind...

As soon as I read the op took it a repco store following a breakdown, I just new he was going from bad to worse.

Cut your losses, get your car back asap and find a mechanic who has half a clue.

I do hope you get it sorted without havingvto completely touch your toes.

Ohh geez, damn it sounded good in the first half of the clip though :)

That kind of mileage from a hydro lifter considering you are running a cam with some decent lift (I would image) and more aggressive ramp rates as well as much heavier springs to control it all is a rather positive result for the quality of the hydro lifters you were using. OEM engines with light springs are designed to run many many years and huge mileage, performance valve trains are not really.
