The Victorian EV tax on kms driven failed in the Federal Court. Then NSW abandoned a similar proposed tax.
Only the Fed Govt can impose a similar tax equivalent to the fuel excise revenue raising.
That is unlikely to happen as the present Labor Govt is dead set on getting everyone into an EV at present, and various barrow pushers want the sale of ICE vehicles to be outlawed by 2035 (?). So any hint of a tax would be contrary to the Labor current EV policies.
IF ...... big IF ........... they get returned at the next election, and the one after, expect a light bulb idea soon after that, when the general population is deemed to have forgotten what is being spouted in 2024.

They will wait until the critical mass is achieved and the economics of EV ownership are better than ICE ownership. Once that happens they will introduce EV taxes.

When the media constantly bang on about a “great new tax” whenever anything is proposed it’s hardly a wonder that the government doesn’t announce such measures with great fanfare.

There’s always an aggrieved party when any tax is proposed and those voices are amplified the loudest.

Oh so it's Rupert's fault I imagine.

You're assuming that will happen though.

Why would it be sneaky?

EV should pay their fair share of costs for the road network they drive on.

EV's tend to be heavier than their ICE counterparts so in reality create more wear and tear on the roads so maybe should pay a little extra?

Fair is fair.
The fairest thing to do would be to move every vehicle onto a 'per kilometer traveled' tax model and completely remove excise on fuel.
Probably not hard to set up automatic reporting and billing for modern electric vehicles that are already connected to their big brother manufacturers but the majority of Australia's transport fleet would need to have electronic monitoring and reporting equipment retro fitted.

Well loss of excise will probably force their hand.

I meant EVs becoming a better economic option over an ICE car.

I'm not saying it won't, but it hasn't happened yet and it's not a given that it will ever happen.

Or just have yearly inspections where the odometer reading is taken.

Fuel excise is already levied on kms travelled.

That is one way you could look at it however if all excise was removed from fuel the govt would have to raise that loss of revenue by another means..
If all vehicles were moved onto a 'per KM' scheme then EV owners couldn't complain that they are being unfairly targeted.......... perhaps?

Yes, I commented earlier that someone will be paying for the lost excise.

EV owners need to stop playing their virtuous posture against paying to use the roads.
