Fitting a transmission cooler

Do series 1 VR's have a transmission cooler stock?

Thats the funny bit tubing in front of the radiator on vx's and other late models yes?

Just had a reco gearbox swapover for $1850 as my clutch plates on nearly every gear where worn out. A mate from UNI said that high temperature breaks down the detergents in the fluid and makes the clutch's wear faster. After spending 2 grand i want these clutches to last as long as possible.

A cooler shouldnt be hard to find, i might get one off a late camry from the wreckers, and the plumbing can be knocked off from work.

But if the tranny doesnt have a provision for a cooler to get connected im stuck.

Anyone tried puting a transmission cooler on a series 1 vr?

there is a small, but shytty cooler in the radiator.. if u wanna get something half decent, go to a transmission specialist n get one, not one from autobarn or whatever! should cost u no more than 200 bucks, including fitting!
a cheaper option u can do is get the bigger sump for the trans, which was designed for towing.. try that!
all vr/vs commies do have a bad habbit of burning the trans oil easily, especially if your driving hard/towing loads

Ofcourse you can fit a cooler, just fit the cooler using the existing pipes to the radiator, and plug the others so they don't corode, or use thees in conjuction with the oil cooler in the radiator.

But if the car is hust standard and you don't do alot of towing, or loading up the tranny excessively, then you don't need a cooler, you will be goin into overkill.
Remember that thetranny needs to operate within certain temperatures for all of the functions of the auto to operate correctly, like overdrive and lock-up convertors etc.

Its been suggested that the life of these gearboxes is greater when an oil cooler is fitted, regardless of whether you tow or not.
From what I remember the VR will use clamp fittings for the cooler, VS II uses threaded fittings.

Get an aftermarket cooler, and fit it. They appear to be bigger capacity than the stock VS ones and cheaper. VSII had a larger cooler for the supercharged motor, and a smaller one for the ecotec. They have threaded fittings. I would fit an aftermarket one at least as big as the SC version. You won't have any problems with enough heat in the transmission, so don't worry about that.
