I'm confused as the how to correctly check fluid level on my ve SS 6 speed auto, trans specialist bloke said to me undo the drain plug on the bottom sump and it should trickle out of full but Wont it all drain out if I remove the plug ? Do I just unscrew the drain plug a little bit or completely remove it ?
you may already have your answer but ill let ya know too as ive done it like 5 times in the past few months to get the level right on the wifes 09 ssv wagon
backed it up on ramps then jacked the front of the car up so they trans was level..(used a magnetic level and stuck it to the underside of the trans)
the guy from holden said to run the car round the block then put it up on the jack stands, once on the jack stands keep it running until your trans sump temp gets to 45-50degC (the right temp for checking apparently, well thats what the bloke from holden said to do anyways) and keep it running while your checking
once at 45-50degC undo the sump plug .....the oil should be just slowly coming out (not full on like ya dumping oil out like ya engine oil)
If the oil is coming out real fast and heaps of it ya have too much oil and ya need to let it come out until that slow drizzle happens.
if no oil comes out you need to put more in...this is done by the fill hole on the top edge on the drivers side (its shown in one of the picks a few comments up) or you could use a hose thats smaller than the sump hole and pump it up into the sump plug untill it starts drizzling out again....ive seen some cars done this way but i did the fill hole at the top drivers side just to go by the book.
in either case once its at that drizzling out point put the sump plug back in and ya done!!!!
I think this is one of the worst designs ever for just "checking" ya oil level but what ever...makes it harder so more people will just pay holden to do it
ive done this like 5 times in the past few months cause i checked it at different temps, lower and higher and the 50degC mark has given me the best result for smooth changes
the reason all the oil doesnt come out is the pan has a raised "tube" above the sump plug that raises the level above the sump plug hole...you can see in my pic from when i took it off to change the oil and filter
anyways hope this helps....i know i was baffled at how to do it when i first had a crack cause of how stupid the design is. Just put a lockable dipstick in the engine bay!!!!!!!!!
